Lag on servers

On every online server I have around 80 ping but I always get some kind of lag. It is a little lag but its enough to damper my time playing this amazing game.

I play Crysis on medium and other games on high so it isn't my computer performance I am pretty sure. Is it my internet connection? I am not sure.

A little help would sure be appreciated. :D

Hard to say for certain, not having seen it, but I've noticed that many of the servers running at the moment are trying to use 50 player slots without having the hardware to handle it. DH uses a bit more juice than RO does (mostly due to the maps) and as a result the server can start to struggle. When that happens you get little lag spike or lost packets. Been experiencing that myself all night - not how we really want our game portrayed at this early stage, but server admins are free to run their servers as they see fit so it's none of our business.

I seem to get the same issue, I have a ping typically under 100, sometimes more. However, I get lag and sometimes the game isn't worth playing when it gets laggy. It may be the people that have high pings on the large servers. I've been on servers where a few people had 300 pings and it was a lagfest. But I remember in the last version I didn't really have this issue, so I'm not sure if it has to do with this new version, maybe the maps are not optimized. I really don't understand it, I'm running AVG Pro, but I use gamebooster to turn everything off (Including AVG's applications). My computer is not bad either.

A major factor is that we didn't intend our maps to be played with 50 or 60 players. Yet for some reason people are only getting servers of that size and it's causing issues. We're trying to optimise some of the maps to improve performance, but we'll have to wait and see how much of a difference it makes.

Try playing on CLOWNS Darkest Hour Playhouse. We only have a 40 player server and it's been full since the release of the DH 3.0 and we have a couple customs too that will auto download once, when those maps starts but we've had very little lag, at least listening to those who have been playing on it.

Certain maps still lag but it's usually the huge tank maps and only at certain locations on the maps while driving but usually never interferes with the actual gameplay.

I've also notice the only time people complain about lag spikes on our server there may be (4-5) 200+ pingers within the game but you can't really do much about them since there is no way to filter out high pingers or setting a ping limit as a server admin that I know of.

Come on over and give a smaller server a try and we'll see you on the battlefield.

That's not uncommon for players that use a wireless router. Matter of fact, it's pretty good indication they are using router with those unbelievable pings.

When watching the scoreboard..and people joining server..you can see your ping climb..just from people joining... think its normal.. After 32 you see it change even more..ToW has set their servers to 40... at 50 we just watched the ping rise to high for Tank maps.. and rather have better gameplay then 50 players..
at this point... I don't hear much about lag problems.. spikes now and then.. but not total lag...
always try to connect to the fastest servers..although you may wish to play someplace else.. it's your best option if you alway lag.
also, custom maps can cause the lag...I know a few servers running some that need to improve the fps... use "stat fps" in console and see whats going on in your framerates in different parts of the map....
Check the whole map..you will notice the framerates change.. Green is good.. red is not..use "stat none" to take it back off..

having ton of problems with lag myself. Maps w/tanks seem to have the most probs, but no one else on the server seems to be having the same problems. Is there some settings I should check?

Specs as req: Fairly old machine, but no problems until recent steam updates and mods. Starting to get the same probs w/RO. Behavior is the key movements dont stop when the key is released, almost no response to change in movement when keys depressed.

For games that have huge environments such as RO, DH, Arma/2/OFP, WW2OL, and BF2:PR you really need four (4) gigs of ram. For now, if you don't have the cash for four gigs, try buying one more stick and adding it. You should see a huge difference in game play.

Another problem could be the video card you are using. I don't know much about ATI products, so I can't really comment on their video cards. Do you know what kind of FPS you get in-game?

Really you have a machine that seems quite cappable of running DH, minus a ram upgrade.

If he is using XP as OS 2 GB Ram would be more then enough. ;)

Well, see that's the thing. I've been playing RO since '06 and have had no problems and the MN and first iterations of DH have been fine too.

What I think it is is not the server, or the memory so much. but my keyboard interface. What's really happening is that when my character hits the ground, he moves forward when I press the w key of course, but as soon as I release the key for me to stop, I keep moving forward, or in some other crazy direction. Same as for tanks, the key directions will not control movement properly, sometimes with the key stroke not registering with the game for 7-10 seconds or more. If I head towards a vehicle to enter it i run into it and around it while trying to hit the enter key to no avail for up to 7-10 seconds as before.
Also the mouse button is not firing on time either and I get the BIOS "overload" buzzing noise when trying to fire.

Is there something in the .ini file that needs edited? Here's mine, is something off?

Well you should find out if the lag is clientsided or serversided.
What´s your ping when the lag occurs (F6 toggles the network info) and how many FPS you get (open console and type in stat fps)?

Ping rate is from 56-60 when the lag is happening with 185 channels going.

If there is no packet loss the reason you lag has to be the server then. (imho)

You only have 1gb memory so i think you should reduce this setting to =64 see if that helps.

thanks for the help with settings recommendations, I'll try them.

:lol: funny thing is, turns out there's something else going on in the machine, too, evidently I have a commercial keylogger/spyprogram installed w/out my knowledge. Also tried unloading the Norton Antivirus service. Removing these two services (including the spylogger) resulted in: Voila! Problems eliminated - smooth gameplay restored.....
